1 day travel itinerary for Marsaskala, Malta

Marsaskala is a quaint seaside town on the South Eastern coast of Malta. A hit with the Maltese, this area is a favoured destination to avoid the hustle and bustle of locations such as Bugibba and Qawra. Stray away from the tourists and relax in this beautiful fishing town with my 1 day travel itinerary.

Morning: Stroll along the promenade and watch the fisherman patiently wait for their morning catch whilst you overlook the salt pans that line the rocky shores of this town. If staying in Malta for a few days, you’ll notice how peaceful Marsaskala is compared to the high rises that litter areas such as Sliema and Saint Julians. Your first stop is St Thomas Bay (the scenic point) which is a short 15 minute wander from the town centre. Since Malta mainly consists of rocky beaches, this bay is no different and the steep(ish) path down to the water needs to be considered if you have young children or difficulties walking. Immerse yourself in the warm waters of the Mediterranean sea, in-between reading a book or soaking up views of the glorious coastline, until lunchtime draws in.

Afternoon: Just a 10 minute walk along the street named ‘Triq Til Gardiel’, which is directly upward from St Thomas Bay, you can head to ‘La Favorita’ for lunch. A popular restaurant with locals, this place offers fresh fish and the national delicacy of rabbit stew. Once you’ve had your fill, you can then saunter back towards the coast to St Thomas Bay Beach (not to mistaken with the scenic point!) This offers much easier access to the sea and offers a couple of bars/ restaurants if you want to grab an ice cream or a cocktail if the afternoon. Zion bar is a personal favourite which spoils you with either perfect views of the sea from their front terrace, or a relaxing hang out in their quirky back garden. Don’t forget to try and spot their pet chameleon too!

Evening: After you’ve soaked up the sun all day, head into town and bask in the beauty of the marina whilst sipping on an ice cold glass of Pino Grigio at Coxwain’s Cabin. Watch the locals enjoy their evening passeggiata and sit along the marina, having a chat amongst friends. Marsaskala centre has plenty of eateries to suit your taste and I can honestly say I didn’t have a single bad meal in my whole trip to Malta. Choose from Thai, Sushi or even Sicilian cuisine but for something more authentic, the small restaurant ‘Tal-Familja’ will really hit the spot! Marsaskala also offers some evening market stalls if you’re in the mood for fresh fruit or a sweet treat. To finish off your day, head to Gelateria Dolce Latte for a delicious ice cream and demolish this whilst basking in the view of fisherman’s boats that delicately bob in the marina.
